Serve this thin soup as an appetizer

Instructions :

  • Pressure cook the Bengal green gram in water till well cooked and soft.

  • Strain the gram. Reserve the liquid.

  • Heat the oil and fry the cumin, chilli and black pepper powders, the cloves, cinnamon and garlic.

  • Add the cooked gram and fry for some more time.

  • Add the tamarind juice, sugar and salt, and cook for five more minutes.

  • Add the reserved gram water, bring to a boil, and temper with the red chillies, mustard seeds and curry leaves.  Serve hot.

Ingredients :

  • 400 Bengal green gram

  • 15 ml oil

  • 1 tsp cum in powder

  • 1-1/2 tsp chilli powder

  • 1 tsp black pepper powder

  • 2 cloves  

  • 2.5 - cm cinnamon

  • 3 to 4 flakes garlic

  • 30 g tamarind, soaked in

  • 2 tbsp water  

  • 1 tsp sugar and salt to taste.
