Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) now available in India

– Reported, November 12, 2012

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), can help repairing and healing previously untreatable and hopeless cases of foot ulcers. With the new machine installed at the Fortis C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases & Endocrinology, doctors hope to save many more feet from getting surgically amputated.

HBOT is the administration of 100 per cent oxygen to a patient in a pressurised environment. The combination of pressure and oxygen increases the number of oxygen molecules that are dissolved in the blood plasma, which is then delivered to the tissues.

Having most advanced chambers in the World, the HBOT stimulates oxygenation in the blood which according to the doctors lead to increased production of cells that produce fibre, a strengthening meshwork, in the body (Fibroblast proliferation), increased tissue repair of skin, joints and other tissues (collagen synthesis), a new growth of arteries and veins (Angiogenesis) and healing of wounds that are almost dead, by boosting oxygen absorption in the blood plasma, thereby reviving the body’s healing process. Whne used, the technique also helps reducing edema and swelling of tissues and Enhance antibiotic activity which helps to arrest the growth of bacteria in pus and dead tissues.

Doctors say that the equipment will be of help to many who earlier had no option but to go for amputation. The HBOT administration is a painless procedure, which makes it helpful for all those who suffer from confinement anxiety.

Prof. Anoop Misra, chairman, Fortis C-DOC, said, “This advanced technology has given us additional tools for repair and healing of previously untreatable and hopeless cases of foot ulcers. With this machine, we hope to save many more feet from getting surgically amputated.” Experts say that the technique will help non healing-treatment resistant diabetic foot wounds, post cancer radiation effects, crush injuries, Osteomyelitis, radio necrosis And autism.

Dr Ashok Damir, head, Advanced Centre for Diabetic Foot & Wound Management, Fortis C-DOC, said “HBOT has revolutionised the management of long standing and so far “untreatable” medical problems”.
