She is also a model.
Marousa Polias is Australian Ladies Amateur Golf Champion 2004. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You must have started playing golf at a very young age and reached the pinnacle of success by being the winner of Australian Women’s Amateur Golf Championship by the age of 21. Tell us about your journey from childhood to success in professional golf. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?
Ms. Marousa Polias:
I began playing golf a lot later than most of my peers. At the age of 10 years old I was quite interested but the local golf club would not accept junior golfers under the age of 12 so I continued with gymnastics. When I was 12, the interest in golf had deteriorated but I was encouraged to give it a try by my father and his business partner. They said to have a go and if I didn’t like it, I could just pass on it. I was accepted into the golf club and there were quite a lot of kids selected but only 1 other girl.
We eventually plucked up the courage to go and play with the others and about 6 months after initially joining, I had a handicap of 45, the maximum. When the school holidays came around I dropped about 20 shots in 4 weeks and the rest is history. At the age of 19, I qualified as an amateur for my first Professional event, the Australian Open and that was when I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a Professional Golfer. I was accepted in the the New South Wales Institute of Sport (a Government body recognizing elite athletes) and benefited greatly from the program thanks to the leadership of the Coach.
Winning the Australian Amateur Championship at 21, was the pinnacle of my Amateur career. It was something I had prepared for with incredible intensity and I am extremely proud of that achievement – it also was the beginning of the road to my Professional career. I could not have achieved anything without my family and my late coach who always encouraged me to set short ,mid and long-term goals. I was also lucky enough to have some amazing encouragement of friends who acted as caddies and supporters. I also need to acknowledge my support groups in other countries as I would never have been able to feel “home” without them. I have been very fortunate to have such amazing support worldwide and I will never forget it.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Your are a a leading model and a professional golfer. How you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?
Ms. Marousa Polias:
When I was competing, it was pretty easy to manage as I am very organised. Usually the two go hand-in-hand because we are promoting, more often than not, golf products and corporate appearances at golf events.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?
Ms. Marousa Polias:
I had a very strict fitness regime which consisted of weight training for strengthening and a lot of core and cardio-vascular training. The most effective method of cardio I found was interval training. I would run for approximately 60 minutes at set intervals. I did a lot of stretching and used thera-bands. I also would have remedial massage and in-between use foam rollers and massage balls to relieve muscle tension. Nowadays, I love to do pilates and high intensity workouts at the gym with an instructor.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Marousa Polias:
I never had a specific diet as I have always eaten healthily but I do believe that you should not deprive yourself of anything. Satisfy your cravings but in moderation.
