Each year more and more people save money, and plan excitedly, for months in order to have their dream holiday, either in their own country or overseas. A few simple precautions and a small but effective selection of essential oils help to ensure that your holiday is as magical as you anticipated.
Airplane travel
There are a few simple rules to follow before a flight in order to arrive feeling as bright as possible and, hopefully to avoid jet lag.
- Drink plenty of water and fruit juice on the plane and try to avoid the temptation of the alcohol cart, whether it is free or not! It you feel nauseous, sip a little of the motion sickness peppermint and honey drink.
- Do not eat unless you are really hungry.
- Wear loose those, or, even better, sandals as your feet might swell on a long journey. If possible wear specialized tights for long haul flights to avoid DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). Walk a lot. I resist the temptation to ask for a window seat, as I try to walk at least every half-hour and I do not want to irritate other passengers.
- Sprinkle a tissue with a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Breathe the scent deeply if you experience pain as the plane is descending.
Pre-Flying Nerve Tamer
Many people are nervous of flying, even though statistically it is one of the safest forms of transport. I suppose the fear comes from losing touch with the ground. If this fear is ruining your pre-holiday excitement, use the following essential oil blend for a week before you leave.
- 1 teaspoon lavender essential oil
- ½ teaspoon bergamot essential oil
- ½ teaspoon geranium essential oil
- 40 drops sandalwood essential oil
- 10 drops chamomile essential oil
To make and use
Place all ingredients in a labeled, dropper bottle and shake to blend.
If possible leave for four days to synergize. Store in a cool, dark place.
- Add 10 drops to 1 teaspoon vegetable oil to use in a deep, warm bath.
- Sprinkle a wet wash cloth with 3 drops, wring out a little and use to rub briskly over the body after a shower or bath.
- Add 4 drops to 1 teaspoon grape seed oil, float on a small bowl of warm water, and use for a massage.
- Use in an air spray and oil burner.
- Sprinkle 1-2 drops of this blend on a tissue or handkerchief, and inhale as needed.
Flying High
Use this blend once you are airborne to deal with nerves and exhaustion. The blend may be used for adult’s children over the age of two years.
- 60 drops lavender oil
- 60 drops geranium essential oil
- 40 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 1 teaspoon vodka
To make and use
Mix together in a labeled spray bottle or in a small bottle with a screw top. Shake to blend.
- If possible leave for four days to synergize. Store in a cool, dark place.
- Spray lightly on a tissue and sniff as needed.
- If you are stressed or nervous, wring a wash cloth out in very hot water, spray very lightly with a little Flying High blend (the equivalent of 1-2 drops), and use to wipe over the face and hands. The heat has a calming effect.
- Holding a hot face cloth on the back of the neck is also soothing and relaxing.
- If using for children, the spray must be very light-only one quick squirt with the spray bottle.
Aching, Swollen Legs and Feet
- If the blend is to be used for children, use spearmint essential oil in preference to peppermint essential oil.
- 3 tablespoons (45 ml) unscented gel
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
To make and use
Mix the gel and essential oils together really well (you don’t want any “hot spots”). Spoon into a labeled jar.
If possible leave for four days to synergize. Store in a cool, dark place.
Pat the gel over the legs and feet whenever you feel the need. Don’t massage into the skin.
Jet Lag Let Go
Have a shower or bath on arrival, and change your clothes. These suggestions can also be used to recover from your trip when you return home.
- 60 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 60 drops lavender essential oil
- 60 drops rosemary essential oil
To make and use
Place all ingredients in a labeled, dropper bottle and shake to blend.
If possible leave for four days to synergize. Store in a cool, dark place.
- Add 10 drops of the blend to 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil and pour into the bath. Agitate the water to disperse.
- If showering, drip 1-2 drops on a hot, moist wash cloth, squeeze out well, and rub briskly over your whole body (avoiding eyes and genitals).
Jet Lag
Flying can get us from one side of the globe to the other in the space of a few hours. A few simple tactics can be helpful to overcome the problems our bodies often experience adjusting to time change.
